Introduction
The Final Destination franchise has been around for 25 years now, and for 25 years, 90s kids were traumatized with what they’ve seen and what could happen to them should they go and do some of the activities they’ve witnessed within the franchise’s 5 films. Now, we have Final Destination: Bloodlines, and a new breed of traumatized teenagers. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein (Freaks 2018). In a way, it sort of reminds me of Tarot (2024).
Characters
Casting was good, though I don’t know most of them (I’m really bad with names and appearances unless they’ve been around for some time). Still, they acted out scenes accordingly.
Stand out performance is from Richard Harmon (as Erik) his tattoo shop scene was great. His hospital scene was even better. I love his expression during his moment, the sheer pain and the look of disbelief of what was happening, pure terror.
Our main protagonist, Stefani Reyes (played by Kaitlyn Santa Juana) wasโฆ good, I mean it was okay, doesn’t really stand out as much. As the main character in the story, she lacked in expressing fear and terror. All throughout she looked worried at most.
The directors of Final Destination Bloodlines gave Todd the reins on his last scene, telling him to say what he wants to say to the of the franchise, and this is what he said:
โI intend to enjoy the time I have left. And I suggest you do the same,โ he says in the film. โLife is precious. Enjoy every single second. You never know whenโฆGood luck.โ
R.I.P. Tony Todd
D3ath scenes
The scenes were actually great, though comparing it to the first ones, it seemed a bitโฆ “clean”, not as messy and gore as I had hoped for. Probably the director was also considering how soft people are nowadays, they’d feel it might be too graphic or something.
I’ve seen some behind the scenes of how the d3ath scenes were shot. Its movie magic I tell you. With how they shot the garbage truck and the hospital scene, it was awesome.
The ideas were original as well, and I still love how they show small things that would lead to a domino effect and ultimately end someone’s life.
Plausibility
Though at times its a bit too farfetched to think that those could happen to you, if you think about it, its not impossible as well. Why do you think people got paranoid after watching Final Destination 1? In my opinion, Final Destination Bloodlines wasn’t as relatable in real life, as the first one.
What I didn’t like
- I know that the spouses of the parents weren’t connected to the “bloodline”, but what ever happened to the father of Stefani and the mother of Erik? All of a sudden they just disappeared.
- The terror on their faces needed a bit more oomph.
- It felt like a conservative take, compared to the first few installments.
Conclusion
Given how pale in comparison horror movies are nowadays to early 2000s, Final Destination Bloodlines was a good entry to the franchise. While also paying homage to the first installment, Bloodlines was able to create an original plot and able to stand on its own. Though it felt a bit conservative compared to the first one, its still a good addition to the series.
