Introduction
It’s not a hype, it’s a fact! Everyone is obsessed with Obsession and for good reason. Phenomenal acting, perfect directing, awesome score and masterful practical effects put together to create this piece of work of a horror film. Directed by Curry Barker.
“In Curry Barker’s supernatural psychological horror film Obsession, an awkward music store employee named Bear breaks a novelty “One Wish Willow” to make his lifelong crush, Nikki, fall deeply in love with him. The spell works, but twists Nikki into an erratic, terrifying, and dangerously obsessive entity rather than a genuine romantic partner.”
A Match Made in Heaven(?)
Inde Navarrette (as Nikki) delivered one of THE BEST performances I’ve seen in a long time. In an interview, she admitted that she scares herself sometimes when doing those takes. The screams were harrowing and got even magnified by Dolby Surround Sounds in the movie theater. You could hear her scream vibrating in your chest. 10/10
Michael Johnston (as Bear) played this ball-less guy in the film. His persona in the film was perfectly portrayed that you’d really feel like he was like that in real life. A spineless, ball-less boy, and it fits so perfectly with the movie’s plot. His terrified, depraved, loss of will state was on point that viewers are pulled in to his situation.
Freaky Nikki
Nickname fits like a glove. Inde Navarrette delivered a masterful performance and I couldn’t picture anyone else being cast as Nikki. She’s got the looks, and partner it with craziness, you’ve got a full package. Navarrette was the pilar for this film to be this successful.
Low Budget Perfection
With a humble budget of around $750k, its fairly obvious that the movie was low budgeted, but that didn’t stop them from delivering one of the most terrifying fims in 2026. You barely see them have a scene on a big public space with tons of extras. Usually they’d be in a store or some confined space. Even with its low budget, they’re successful with their use of what they had. The effects were shown and used to its maximum potential.
Marriage of Cinematography and Music Score
The scenes shot and score that was made went hand in hand in holy matrimony, delivering picture perfect scenes with glorious music score. The dread that comes with it was traumatizing. Very well done.
Final Thoughts
I had the pleasure of watching both Backrooms and Obsession in one night, thanks to my wife. Both had something to prove and prove they did. Obsession was a more straightforward kind of horror compared to Backrooms. Obsession left a deeper impact for me, I could hear her screams while driving last night. Both are highly recommended and to be appreciated on the big screen.
