Introduction
Recently, there has been an itch of mine, trying to find that perfect balance between horror, music, romance, and subtle comedy. Then I stumbled upon Fresh. As the title implies, aside from the very obvious reason, it gives gore horror a fresh take. Giving it a good balance of flavor, using the right amount of ingredients at the perfect moments. Delivered fresh for your viewing pleasure.
“The horrors of modern dating are seen through the eyes of a young woman who is battling to survive her new boyfriend’s unusual appetites.”
Characters
Sebastian Stan (as Steve) is a very underrated actor. Most people only see him as Bucky A.K.A The Winter Soldier from The Avengers. If you’ve watched this, you’d know he has far more things to offer. In my opinion, he’d do best under thriller/psychological horror genre. Its his charming smile and very likeable personality that gets you in trouble.
Daisy Edgar-Jones (as Noa) was the perfect pick for the role. If you’ve seen the 1 season series “Normal People (2020)” and “Where the Crawdads Sing (2022)” she’s the perfect kind of gal for the job. She naturally fits the role, her soft voice and charming gives that innocent look, yet her eyes would say she’d fight to the d3ath to survive.
Awesome Music
Bangin’ music lineup and it plays perfectly well with the scene at hand.
Perfect Three-way Combo
A masterful blend of music, comedy, and horror. Fresh delivers on all three corners and creates a perfect pyramid. The music was awesome; comedy was just enough and it was executed at the right moments; the horror aspect of it was just enough, not too much gore, yet we all know what is happening just by the sounds they’re making.
Lacks Gore?
I’m honestly torn with the lack of gore scenes, because I’m a fan of gore films myself and I was expecting some of it from watching this. But then again, its a good, mild way of introducing the horror genre of gore and cannibalism. Fresh is a good starting point in my opinion.
Final Thoughts
Disney+ Fresh delivers in all aspects. From the chemistry between Sebastian Stan and Daisy Edgar-Jones, the laughter they shared and the music they danced to—to the horror that ensued. Fresh is a good starting point for beginner horror fans, its not too much, but its enough to get your heartrate up. Highly recommended.
