Introduction
A film that taps into multiple genres such as action, romance, thriller, mystery and a little bit of comedy. You’d think it would be a hot mess but it actually blended beautifully. They were able to fit everything into the 2 hours that they had, and the pacing was great as well. This is an Apple TV+ Original, Directed by Scott Derrickson โ The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), Sinister (2012), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005), The Black Phone (2021).
The Gorge tells the story of two highly-trained operatives that are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from a mysterious evil that lurks within. They work together to keep the secret from crawling out, literally.
Characters
- Levi Kane (played by Miles Teller) was great. Though he was better in Whiplash (2014). He was still able to deliver that persona of someone who lives for the next mission. Regardless of the place, situation and duration. Once called into action, he will do it. He was able to project that personality with his character.
- Drasa (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) have always captivated me, from The Witch (2015), The Queen’s Gambit (2020), to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). The most I’m impressed with her here was her accent. Her native language is Spanish, but in The Gorge, she was able to do a Lithuanian accent with her Lithuanian language advisor. Even her whispers, or short words, you could here the accent, and that deserves some praise.
- Action-wise both of them were great. Chemistry between them were on point as well.
- It was a treat to see Sigourney Weaver here, with almost the same role as she had in The Cabin in the Woods (2011). As always, commanding presence and stellar performance.
Storytelling
Two hours is a bit long for me to be honest, but the pacing here was great and it entertained me throughout the whole movie. Even the first act, when their lives before The Gorge were being shown, it was a good background check, and it was enough for the viewers to know who they were.
Act Two was were I was on the edge of my seat. When they started communicating and then the Hallowmen were revealed, that kept my eyes and ears glued to the screen. The romance wasn’t cheesy as it was shown properly and didn’t feel forced.
Act Three was the best. When everything was revealed, my lore-fandom self was jumping for joy. It gave me that lore itch I’ve always been craving about, specially with mysteries such as this one. The history of The Gorge was perfectly told and I loved it. The ending was cherry on top.
Dialogue
Great dialogue. Nothing felt like shoving down my throat kind of conversation. Even the poem part made sense.
Sound and music
Music was great, the impending doom kind of feel. It creates this atmosphere like in a different world.
Creature Designs
This was very well done, it reminded me of the crew of the Flying Dutchman in Disney‘s Pirates of the Carribean. Creature design plus the lore behind it, that makes for a fantastic combination.
Conclusion
I’ve yet to watch enough titles this 2025, but The Gorge has to be on my top 10 so far. The blending of genre was perfect. Dialogue was great. Lead roles’ chemistry was fire as well. Anya Taylor-Joy was awesome as usual. A highly recommended, edge of your seat watch this 2025.
