Introduction
Get ready your pillows and blankets because you’re in for a snooze fest. In A Violent Nature is directed by Chris Nash, who also did “ABCs of Death 2” and “Life changer” comes to us with this different take on a slasher film.
When a group of teens takes a locket from a collapsed fire tower in the woods, they unwittingly resurrect the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime. The undead killer soon embarks on a bloody rampage to retrieve the stolen locket, methodically slaughtering anyone who gets in his way.
Opting out of Sound Effects and Music
Chris Nash decided to opt out music and sound effects for the entirety of the film, In A Violent Nature. It’s different, the silent uncertainty of the surroundings makes it eerie and pokes at my anxiety. It was refreshing at first to be honest, until it’s not anymore, about a third in, every time he walks, the only thing we could hear was his thumping footsteps, and the crunching of fallen leaves and twigs under his shoes. After a while it felt like a Walking Simulator where you get to be a serial killer.
Weak Story
The story was very unforgettable and weak. The gang just happens to wake Johnny up accidentally and he went on a killing spree to retrieve a jewelry. I wasn’t even curious about the story or what will happen next, it was hard to even pay attention to the movie. The length of the movie is an hour and 30 minutes, and I think they could’ve just made a short film about this. I think 30 minutes would suffice, just cut off all the walkathons that happened.
Forgettable Characters
Backstory of Johnny was weak, it didn’t make much sense to me how he came to be. His method of killing was the only highlight of the entire film, it gives homage to 90s-2000s slasher films, pure violence and gore. Other than those kill moments, it’s pretty forgettable. I just watched it last night and I couldn’t even remember the faces of the entire cast.
What I didn’t like
- The movie was too long for what it had to offer, and most of the duration of it was a snooze fest.
- They tried to go with sounds of nature instead of using sound effects or music score, unfortunately it made me all the more sleepy.
- Characters had no chemistry with each other whatsoever, and all of them were forgettable. Even Johnny, if it weren’t for his mask, I’d easily forget his face.
- The only thing that this movie had going for them was the k1lls, and definitely not the story. Cocaine Bear had better material.
Conclusion
If you want to watch a modern slasher film paired up with a walking simulator, and you don’t like anxiety inducing music, In A Violent Nature is for you. I honestly hope you enjoy it as much as I would’ve wanted to.one-time watch. Don’t worry, it’s not as preachy as it sounds and didn’t feel like a Christian propaganda movie either.
