Introduction
The narrative itself of Aftershock isn’t real, but the event that occurred happened in real life. It was based on the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile back in 2010, and many of the scenes were shot in areas that are still in ruins after the disaster. Directed by Eli Roth, The Green Inferno (2013)
“Aftershock is a 2012 disaster horror film directed by Nicolás López and was written by López, Eli Roth, and Guillermo Amoedo, from a story by Roth and López. The film stars Roth, Andrea Osvárt, Ariel Levy, Natasha Yarovenko, Nicolas Martinez, and Lorenza Izzo as a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub in Chile when a massive earthquake hits and quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare.”
Characters
Eli Roth himself starred in this survival/horror flick, and one of the better actors in their lineup, in my opinion. Kylie (Lorenza Izzo) was phenomenal, just like she was in Green Inferno, her display of horror is solid, always a good cast for the horror genre.
To be honest, there were too many characters involved in Aftershock that I forgot most of them.
Gore Effects
As much as a B-movie treatment this movie got regarding its effects, its the only thing that kept me from turning the TV off. It was still satisfying to watch and some of it made me go “Damn! That’s gotta hurt!”.
What I Didn’t Like
The effects however felt cheap. Not an A-list movie for sure, will definitely fall on the B-movie category. There’s no “omg” moment, most of what happened felt ordinary; the latter part was a bit of a surprise but not jaw-dropping in any way. The ending twist was foreshadowed early on when the disaster struck, so it was like “yeah, it was bound to happen” kind of a scenario.
the movie wasted too much time in introducing the three guys. So much backstory about certain characters but ultimately was useless information in the end, it didn’t really do anything to progress the plot.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for something to kill time and want something in the lines of horror/action/adventure, then you’ve found it! I wouldn’t categorize it as a film more of like a survival flick. To be honest, it was disappointing, specially coming off of watching Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno, I was expecting more or of the same caliber. I’d watch The Day After Tomorrow (2004) or 2012 (2009) any day over this hot mess.
